Has anyone ever shortened an automatic shifter before?

Why would you need a short throw automatic shifter? Or do you mean just make the stalk shorter?

yes I want the stalk shorter...shoudl have said it differently...it will in the long run be used to help make room for something I am putting in but i also don't see the point in it being so long anyway. you know?

Leverage. Easier to move the shifter the longer it is. i'm sure you could remove the handle and cut the stalk off, but don't saw straight thru - the rod for the button is in there... Use a dremel. then dremel off the rod its higher than the stalk.

Once that's done, start working on a nasty thumb callous. You'll need it to aide in pushing the rod down to release the shortened shifter :)
